Flint, Mich. – Maurizio Colella scored twice and both Ryan Moore and Nick Caamano recorded two point nights in a 5-3 loss to the Kitchener Rangers Sunday. The Firebirds dropped their first home game of the season after starting with three straight wins. It was goaltender Luke Cavallin’s second career OHL start, first on home-ice.
Both teams failed to score on the power-play on a combined five opportunities but the Firebirds did score a shorthanded goal for the second time in the last three games.
Seven minutes into the contest, Flint goaltender Luke Cavallin starting his first OHL career game at home and second overall, made a series of saves stopping three good chances from in front of the goal.
The Firebirds also had a number of chances, none better than with 18 seconds remaining when Ty Dellandrea made a bid, breaking in alone. While he was unable to score, he did draw a slashing penalty to Kitchener’s Logan Stanley.
Kitchener scored the first goal of the game early in the second period. Joseph Garreffa made dished the puck to Adam Mascherin on the goal line. Mascherin slid it to Riley Damiani who got the shot off, however Mascherin finished the play, scoring on the rebound at 2:12.
Flint tied the game on a great shot from Maurizio Colella at 13:03 of the second period. Ryan Moore passed the puck to Colella at the bottom of the right circle and Colella scored short-side, top-shelf. Nicholas Caamano drew the second assist.
The Rangers would take the lead again on a delayed penalty kill. Connor Bunnaman entered the Firebirds’ zone with speed and fed a pass to Nick McHugh who was able to back-hand the shot top-shelf, short-side past Cavallin. The goal came at 15:52 and Bunnaman had the only assist.
The Firebirds came out for the third period and quickly tied the game at the 46 second mark. Ryan Moore scored his third of the year. Caamano fed more from the bottom of the left circle in the slot and Moore’s backhander found the back of the net. Caamano had the lone assist.
The Rangers earned the next goal at 4:16 of the third period when Jake Henderson ripped a puck on net from the left corner. Cavallin made the initial save but Bunnaman dug the puck out from under Cavallin and scored to increase the Rangers’ lead to 3-2.
The see-saw battle continued as the Firebirds tied the game for the third time at 8:17. Colella tipped a pass while charging hard to the net from Ty Dellandrea. The goal was shorthanded and was the Firebirds second shorthanded goal in the last three games. It was Colella’s second goal of the game and sixth of the season.
Bunnaman put the Rangers back in front with his second of the game from Henderson and Stanley which proved to be the winning goal at 12:34 and Kitchener added an insurance goal 28 seconds later as Greg Meireles lit the lamp at 13:02 from Adam Liska and Cole Carter.
