Firebirds’ Gordeev Listed in Final Rankings for 2017 NHL Draft
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League announced that 70 OHL players have been listed by NHL Central Scouting in their Final Rankings for the 2017 NHL Draft which takes place June 23-24 in Chicago, Illinois. Flint Firebirds’ defenseman Fedor Gordeev is ranked 104th among North American skaters, moving up 84 spots from the midterm rankings in January.
Gordeev, a native of Toronto, Ont., earned 14 points in 64 games last season with the Firebirds. The 6-foot-6, 208-pound defenseman scored four goals and added 10 assists, including 45 penalty minutes in his first season in Flint.
Will Bitten (Montreal Canadiens) and Nick Caamano (Dallas Stars) were two Flint Firebirds that were selected in the NHL Draft last June. Caamano then signed a three-year NHL entry-level contract with Dallas on Apr. 6, 2017. Along with Caamano, Kole Sherwood (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Jalen Smereck (Arizona Coyotes) were two other players on the Flint Firebirds’ roster last season that were signed by NHL teams.
In addition to Gordeev, Firebirds’ C.J. Clarke, Samuel Duchesne, Jake Durham and Jack Phibbs are four other first-time eligible players to be selected in the NHL Draft in June 2017.
The 70 players includes 46 forwards, 16 defenseman and eight goaltenders, contributing to a total of 157 Canadian Hockey League players included in the rankings.
10 of the top 30 ranked North American prospects are from the OHL led by Gabriel Vilardi of the Windsor Spitfires ranked fourth, Owen Tippett of the Mississauga Steelheads ranked seventh, Nick Suzuki of the Owen Sound Attack ranked 10th, Jason Robertson of the Kingston Frontenacs ranked 14th, Isaac Ratcliffe of the Guelph Storm ranked 15th, defenceman Conor Timmins of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds ranked 18th followed by another blueliner in Nicolas Hague of the Mississauga Steelheads ranked 20th. London Knights teammates Robert Thomas (22nd) and Alex Formenton (29th) close out the top 30 before three straight OHL players in Morgan Frost (31, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds), Eemeli Rasanen (32, Kingston Frontenacs) and Matthew Strome (33, Hamilton Bulldogs) follow.
In goal, Windsor Spitfires sophomore Michael DiPietro leads the way as North America’s fourth ranked netminder. The OHL also features Kyle Keyser of the Oshawa Generals ranked 11th, Matthew Villalta of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds ranked 16th, Kaden Fulcher of the Hamilton Bulldogs ranked 18th, Jake McGrath of the Sudbury Wolves ranked 19th and Stephen Dhillon of the Niagara IceDogs ranked 21st. Christian Propp (27, Barrie Colts) and Luke Richardson (30, Kitchener Rangers) round out OHL goaltenders on the rankings.
The Ontario Hockey League has a total of 70 players ranked, followed by the Western Hockey League with 58 players, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 29 players.
68 OHL players were listed in NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings released in January, while 48 players from the OHL were selected in the 2016 NHL Draft including nine players selected in the first round.
