Flint, Mich. – The Arizona Coyotes have assigned defenseman Jalen Smereck to the Flint Firebirds for the 2017-18 season.
Last season, Smereck, a six-foot-one, 192-pound defenseman, was fifth on the Firebirds’ roster with 45 points (9G, 36A) in 60 games played. Smereck finished the regular season with a plus-10 rating, scoring five times on the power-play, earned points in eight of his last nine games and had 12 multi-point nights. Smereck was also awarded the ‘Blue Collar Worker’ and ‘Humanitarian of the Year’ honors at the Flint Firebirds awards banquet.
“Jalen is a talented player and an excellent person,” said Flint Firebirds Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Barclay Branch. “He will bring a veteran presence and leadership to our group and we are thrilled to be welcoming him back to our organization.”
The Detroit, Mich. native became the first Flint Firebird to sign a three-year entry level NHL contract last October with the Arizona Coyotes and played in one NHL preseason game on Sep. 26, posting a plus-one rating in 13:44 of game action.
Prior to playing in the OHL with the Firebirds, Smereck played his youth hockey in Detroit with both the Little Caesars and Oakland Jr. Grizzlies AAA Hockey Club’s.
Since the Flint Firebirds’ inception in 2015, the club has had 12 drafted or NHL signed players on its roster consisting of Will Bitten (Montreal), Nick Caamano (Dallas), Connor Chatham (New Jersey), Fedor Gordeev (Toronto), Nick Mattinen (Toronto), Brent Moran (Dallas), Alex Nedeljkovic (Carolina), Alex Peters (Dallas), Vili Saarijarvi (Detroit), Kole Sherwood (Columbus), Jalen Smereck (Arizona) and Josh Wesley (Carolina).
