Firebirds Hire James Malechek as Head Strength & Conditioning Coach

Flint, Mich. – The Flint Firebirds Hockey Club announced today the hiring of James Malechek as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Malechek comes to Flint with a Master’s of Science (MS) degree in Human Performance at Lindenwood University and a Bachelor’s of Science in Fitness Management at University of Wisconsin–Parkside. He is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

“We are excited to add James and his diverse background to the Flint Firebirds Hockey club,” said Flint Firebirds General Manager Barclay Branch. “Having a dedicated strength and conditioning coach to work with our players is one of the most crucial aspects to the future success of our program and we couldn’t be happier to have him on board.”

Most recently, Malechek was an intern strength and conditioning coach at the University of Michigan for the hockey, volleyball and wrestling programs. Prior to working at the University of Michigan, he was the strength and conditioning coach for the Pikes Peak Miners Hockey Club in the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL). An athlete himself, Malechek was a wrestler at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and was tabbed with the prestigious honor as a NCAA All-American in 2012.

“I am very excited and blessed to be part of such a prestigious organization,” said Malechek. “To be working with an outstanding coaching staff that has so many years of experience, not only as coach’s but as professional hockey players as well, is going to be a great experience. I am looking forward to this year’s training camp, meeting the players and staff and making a lasting impact on the organization.”

James will be responsible for improving the team’s overall strength and conditioning programs including the physical testing and evaluation at training camp, creation of individualized in-season and post-season player workout programs and assistance in the rehabilitation efforts for all injured players.

The Firebirds’ training camp begins this Monday, Aug. 28 through Wednesday, Aug. 30. The camp will be held at the Firebirds’ official practice facility, Iceland Arenas, on Elms Rd. in Clayton Township and is open to the public with free admission for all on-ice sessions.
