Flint, Mich. – The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today that they have called up Flint Firebirds’ forward Kole Sherwood to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters. Sherwood is expected to join the Monsters prior to their game at Iowa tonight.
A native of New Albany, Ohio, Sherwood was acquired by the Firebirds in a trade with the London Knights in September. He signed a three-year entry level NHL contract with the Blue Jackets in July of 2015.
“This is a great opportunity for Kole to continue his strong season and get the pro experience,” said Flint Firebirds General Manager George Burnett. “It’s nice to see him get rewarded and it will be a good step for him to continue to enhance his development.”
This season, Sherwood, a six-foot-one, 202-pound right-winger, was second on the Firebirds’ roster with 85 points (33G, 52A) in 60 games played. He averaged a point-per-game in the 2017 OHL Playoffs, scoring four times and adding one assist in five games.
Sherwood was the first Columbus-area native to sign an NHL contract with the Blue Jackets in franchise history. He served three seasons from 2012-15 with the Ohio Blue Jackets U16 and U18 teams and spent the 2011-12 campaign with the Ohio Blue Jackets Bantam Major AAA program.
