Flint, Mich. – The Arizona Coyotes announced today that they have called-up Flint Firebirds’ defenseman Jalen Smereck to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners. Smereck is expected to join the Roadrunners prior to their road series this weekend against Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose.
A native of Detroit, Mich., Smereck was acquired by the Firebirds in a trade with the Oshawa Generals in July of 2016. Smereck became the first Flint Firebird to sign a three-year entry level NHL contract this past October with the Arizona Coyotes and played in one NHL preseason game on September 26, posting a plus-one rating in 13:44 of game action.
“Jalen had a strong year on the ice which leads to a great opportunity for him to continue his season at the pro level,” said Flint Firebirds General Manager George Burnett. “It’s a good step for Jalen to continue to enhance his development and it’s great to see him get rewarded.”
This season, Smereck, a six-foot-one, 192-pound defenseman, was fifth on the Firebirds’ roster with 45 points (9G, 36A) in 60 games played. Smereck finished the regular season with a plus-10 rating, scoring five times on the power-play, earned points in eight of his last nine games and had 12 multi-point nights. Smereck was also awarded the ‘Blue Collar Worker’ and ‘Humanitarian of the Year’ honors at the Flint Firebirds awards banquet.
Prior to playing in the OHL with the Firebirds, Smereck played his youth hockey in Detroit with both the Little Caesars and Oakland Jr. Grizzlies AAA Hockey Club’s.
