Owen Sound, Ont. – Despite Flint’s Zach Grzelewski scoring twice, the Flint Firebirds fell to the Owen Sound Attack 5-2 on Wednesday night in the first of a four game road swing.
Justin Brack would start the scoring for the Attack at 4:50 of the first period poking a loose puck past Flint’s Zack Bowman to give Owen Sound the early lead.
1:07 later, Jonah Gadjovich would find the back of the net, firing the puck off the left post and into the cage from the right-wing circle.
Ethan Szypula gave Owen Sound a three goal lead from the bottom of the left circle finding an empty hole above Bowman’s right shoulder, scoring short-side top shelf.
Kyle Keyser relieved Bowman at 13:52 of the first period giving the rookie netmnder his first opportunity between the pipes in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
With the man-advantage in the second period, Owen Sound’s Josh Sterk attempted a shot on net from the left circle that was deflected to the stick of Nick Suzuki catching Keyser sliding the opposite way. Suzuki scored to give the Attack a 4-0 lead at 8:16 of the middle frame.
Grzelewski would score his first of the night for the Firebirds at 15:03, capitalizing on a short premiere pass from Will Bitten at the top of the crease to bring the game within three heading into the locker room after two periods of play.
Vili Saarijärvi recorded a multi-assist night for the second time in two games after Grzelewski picked up a deflection and found the back of the net to cut the deficit to two goals.
Jarett Meyer finished the scoring off on the power-play after Owen Sound’s Petrus Palmu’s shot went wide of the goal redirecting onto Meyer’s stick in the right circle who one-timed the puck five-hole for the Attack’s fifth lamplighter of the evening.
The Firebirds were 0/3 on the power-play Wednesday night while Owen Sound was 2/4 with the man-advantage. Bowman made 12 saves on 15 shots while Keyser made 26 saves on 28 shots. The Firebirds were outshot 43-32 on the evening. Grzelewski was awarded the third star of the game.
Flint will continue their four game road trip this weekend when the Firebirds head to Erie, Penn. for a Saturday night tilt at 7 p.m. (ET). The Firebirds will then take on the Mississauga Steelheads Sunday at 2 p.m. The Firebirds return home to Flint on Saturday, Oct. 10 against the Sarnia Sting at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 11 against the Peterborough Petes at 5 p.m.
