Video: Firebirds’ Colella Signs with New York Islanders’ Affiliate Worcester Railers

Flint, Mich. – The Worcester (Massachusetts) Railers, ECHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, have signed Flint Firebirds’ forward Maurizio Colella to an amateur tryout agreement (ATO). Colella is expected to join the Railers prior to their home game tomorrow vs. the Brampton Beast.

Colella, 21, led the Firebirds with 61 points (23G, 38A) in 67 games this season. The Tottenham, Ont. native also led Flint in assists, shorthanded goals (3) and shootout goals (4) during the 2017-18 campaign.

“We would like to wish Maurizio every success as he moves forward in his career,” said Flint Firebirds Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Barclay Branch. “He has left an indelible mark on the Firebirds’ organization, both on and off the ice, through his tremendous leadership, character and work ethic. We are very happy and proud for both him and his family.”

In five seasons in the OHL, Colella tallied 130 points (52G, 78A) in 278 games. He was named an assistant captain for the 2017-18 season and was selected as the Firebirds’ “Blue Collar” award winner as the hardest working player this year. Colella played his youth hockey with the York Simcoe Express AAA Hockey Club.

The 2018 OHL Priority Selection takes place Saturday, Apr. 7. The Firebirds have the second-overall pick and fans can follow along with live coverage via beginning at 9 a.m.

Since the Flint Firebirds’ inception in 2015, the club has had 13 drafted or NHL signed players on its roster consisting of Will Bitten (Montreal), Nick Caamano (Dallas), Connor Chatham (New Jersey), Fedor Gordeev (Toronto), Kyle Keyser (Boston Bruins), Nick Mattinen (Toronto), Brent Moran (Dallas), Alex Nedeljkovic (Carolina), Alex Peters (Dallas), Vili Saarijarvi (Detroit), Kole Sherwood (Columbus), Jalen Smereck (Arizona) and Josh Wesley (Carolina).
