Video: Sarnia Earns Friday Night Victory Over Firebirds
Sarnia, Ont. – Flint scored a power-play goal for the fourth consecutive game and outshot the home squad 40-37 but the Sarnia Sting used three special teams’ goals en-route to a 7-1 victory Friday evening. Goaltender Garrett Forrest made 30 saves and Jack Wismer scored his third goal of the season.
Sarnia jumped out to a good start, recording the first six shots on goal. Forrest made a highlight-reel save in the first minute of the contest. However, with Ethan Keppen and Fedor Gordeev (Toronto Maple Leafs) both in the penalty box, Sarnia scored the first goal of the game just 4:37 into play. Connor Schlichting dished the puck to Jordan Ernst at the right-circle who sent a one-timer past Forrest on the glove-side. The goal was Ernst’s 20th of the season, assisted by Schlichting and Jamieson Rees.
Just over six minutes remained in the frame when Sarnia found the back of the net to increase their lead to two. From the top of the right circle, Colton Kammerer found Sean Josling backdoor for his 13th of the campaign. Ryan McGregor (Toronto Maple Leafs) added the second assist. The shots on goal after one period of play favored the Sting by a 15-12 margin.
Special teams contributed both second-period goals, one per side. First, Sarnia’s Franco Sproviero knocked a puck loose on a Flint power-play and skated alone into the Firebirds’ zone. He faked a forehand shot to right-wing side, then deked to the backhand and lifted a rising shot over the outstretched Forrest. Colton Kammerer was credited with the lone assist on the tally, his second of the contest.
Flint would then find paydirt on the same power-play, just 28 seconds later. From the right-wing wall in the Sarnia zone, Keppen slid the puck to CJ Clarke in the corner. Clarke threaded-the-needle to Wismer backdoor. The right-handed winger one-timed the puck home past goaltender Justin Fazio for his third of the year. With the assist, Clarke increased his point-streak to five consecutive games.
Third period scoring consisted of four unanswered goals by the home team. Ryan McGregor scored less than one minute into the frame shorthanded, collecting his tenth of the season and second point of the night. Sarnia would go on to strike three times in three minutes later in the third. Josling and Sproviero each collected their second goal of the game and Hugo Leufvenious added his 16th of the season. The helpers on the goals in the final stanza were contributed by Adam Ruzicka (Calgary Flames), Ernst, Drake Rymsha (Los Angeles Kings), Sproviero, and Josling.
