Video: Firebirds’ Smereck Called-Up to Arizona Coyotes’ AHL Affiliate, Tucson Roadrunners

Flint, Mich. – The NHL’s Arizona Coyotes announced today that they have called up Flint Firebirds’ defenseman Jalen Smereck to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners. Smereck is expected to join the Roadrunners prior to their game vs. the San Jose Barracuda tonight.

Smereck, 21, became the first Flint Firebird to sign a three year NHL Entry-Level Contract in October of 2016. The Firebirds’ captain led all Flint defenseman during the 2017-18 season with 34 points (10G, 24A) in 46 games.

“We wish Jalen the best of luck as he moves forward in his hockey career,” said Flint Firebirds Vice President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Barclay Branch. “Jalen was a great captain for the Firebirds, providing excellent leadership for our young players. The positive impact that Jalen had on our organization and community will be felt for years to come.”

Smereck, a native of Detroit, Mich., played in one NHL preseason game with the Coyotes on Sep. 26, 2016 and earned a plus-one rating, two penalty minutes, two hits and 13:44 of playing time against the Los Angeles Kings. The 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman also dressed in two games with the Roadrunners this season before being returned to Flint on Nov. 22.

Prior to skating with the Firebirds, Smereck played his youth hockey in Detroit with both the Little Caesars and Oakland Jr. Grizzlies AAA Hockey Club’s.

Since the Flint Firebirds’ inception three season ago in 2015, the club has had 13 drafted or NHL signed players on its roster consisting of Will Bitten (Montreal), Nick Caamano (Dallas), Connor Chatham (New Jersey), Fedor Gordeev (Toronto), Kyle Keyser (Boston Bruins), Nick Mattinen (Toronto), Brent Moran (Dallas), Alex Nedeljkovic (Carolina), Alex Peters (Dallas), Vili Saarijarvi (Detroit), Kole Sherwood (Columbus), Jalen Smereck (Arizona) and Josh Wesley (Carolina).
