Firebirds’ Prospects Kressler & Othmann win OHL Gold Cup championship Sunday

Kitchener, Ont. – Flint Firebirds’ prospects Braeden Kressler and Brennan Othmann are OHL Gold Cup champions. Both Othmann and Kressler played integral roles in leading Team GTHL (Greater Toronto Hockey League) Blue to a perfect 4-0-0-0 record at the prestigious tournament this weekend. Othmann finished the OHL Gold Cup tied for the tournament lead in points (8), goals (3) and assists (5) in just four games. Kressler finished third on Team GTHL Blue’s roster with five points (2G, 3A) in four games.

Down 3-0 in the second period Sunday, Othmann assisted on the tying goal for Team GTHL Blue. Team GTHL Red struck again before the end of the second period to lead 4-3. Then, Kressler scored the tying goal in the final period prior to Team GTHL Blue finding the back-of-the-net again with 1:03 remaining to win the championship.

Othmann and Kressler were two of the six Firebirds’ prospects that were drafted by Flint in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection on Apr. 6 that competed in the OHL Gold Cup. Moskowitz (2G, 1A) claimed second place as a member of Team GTHL Red. Three more Firebirds’ prospects that competed in the OHL Gold Cup were Tyler Dunbar (0G, 1A), Zacharie Giroux (1G, 0A) and Matthew Roy (0G, 1A).

17 of the 20 current eligible Firebirds have competed at the OHL Gold Cup: Michael Bianconi, Ryan Bangs, Dennis Busby, Luke Cavallin, Ty Dellandrea, Kyle Harris, Hunter Holmes, Ethan Keppen, Riley McCourt, Cody Morgan, Jack Phibbs, Connor Roberts, Emmet Pierce, Jacob Winterton, Eric Uba, Evan Vierling and Jack Wismer.

The OHL Gold Cup is an annual showcase event featuring top under-16 talent in Ontario running from May 2-May 5 at the Activa Sportsplex in Kitchener, Ont.  As part of the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence (POE), players competing at the OHL Gold Cup have an opportunity to be evaluated for invitation to the national under-17 development camp, where Hockey Canada gathers the top talent from across the country to introduce players to the national team program and provide a foundation of development as they progress through the POE.

Fans can meet the newest additions at the Firebirds’ annual orientation camp May 17-19 at Iceland Arenas on Elms Rd. in Clayton Township. Firebirds’ newly drafted prospects from the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, prospects from previous OHL Priority Selections, as well as free agent invites and current Firebirds will be in attendance. Fans are invited to attend the annual Firebirds’ Blue vs. White scrimmage Saturday, May 18 at Flint Iceland Arenas. This event is free and open to the public.
