Flint, Mich. – The Flint Firebirds announced today the hiring of Sean Howard to the club’s scouting staff.
Howard, 49, has spent the past 22 years as a scout in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) between the Kingston Frontenacs and the Sudbury Wolves. Howard has worked alongside scouting teams that have selected future NHL players such as Adam McQuaid (Boston Bruins), Mike Smith (Edmonton Oilers), New York Rangers’ 2005 first-round draft pick (12th overall) Marc Staal and Detroit Red Wings’ 1979 first-round (3rd overall) draft pick Mike Foligno.
“We would like to welcome Sean to the Flint Firebirds’ organization,” said Flint Firebirds Vice President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Barclay Branch. “Sean brings a wealth of scouting experience to our club having been in the league for more than 20 seasons and will play a key role in discovering talent for the Firebirds moving forward.”
Howard was the general manager of the OHL Gold Cup’s Ottawa District Hockey Association (ODHA) and Team Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO) for three years from 2013-2015, winning the OHL Gold Cup in 2013.
“I’m thankful that Barclay has gave me this opportunity to work with an organization like Flint that is on the rise,” said Howard. “I’m excited to work with Barclay, Joe [Stefan] and with the staff that is assembled. The Firebirds’ scouting staff is a veteran staff and a very respected staff and I look forward to be able to work alongside them.”
On the ice, Howard was a goaltender and was selected into the OHL by the Toronto Marlboros (now the Guelph Storm) in the 1987 OHL Draft. Howard played Junior A hockey with the Kanata Valley Lasers in the then Central Junior Hockey League (CJHL), now the Kanata Lasers in the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL). Of note, he backstopped the Lasers to their first victory in franchise history.
