Video: Firebirds’ McCourt signs with Toronto Marlies

Flint, Mich. – The Toronto Marlies, American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, have signed Flint Firebirds’ defenseman Riley McCourt to a two year AHL contract Thursday.

“We’d like to congratulate Riley and his family on signing a professional contract with the Toronto Marlies,” said Flint Firebirds Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Barclay Branch. “He’s played a critical role in transitioning our program on the ice and we wish him all the best moving forward.”

McCourt, 20, finished fifth among all OHL defenseman in points and also finished third on the Firebirds roster in points last season, recording 62 points (18G, 44A) in 63 games. He increased his point-production in each of his four seasons in the OHL and currently leads the Firebirds franchise all-time records among all defenseman in career goals (28), assists (79) and points (107) and leads the Firebirds’ franchise among defenseman in goals (18), assists (44), and points (62) in a single season.

“It’s an honor to be able to continue my professional career with a team that’s so close to my hometown,” said McCourt. “The Firebirds organization has been nothing but a first-class experience from top down and I’m very thankful to the coaching staff, players and fans for getting me to this point.”

McCourt, a 5-foot-11, 173-pound skater, earned a career high eight-game point-streak this past season and was also the first OHL defenseman to earn the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week last campaign. All-time, McCourt recorded an impressive 117 points (30G, 87A) in 175 games in his four-year career in the OHL.

The St. Catharines, Ont. native was a third round (45th overall) pick in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection from the Niagara North Stars AAA Hockey Club in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association South Central Triple A League (OMHA-SCTA) and attended NHL rookie camp with the Boston Bruins in September 2019.

The Toronto Marlies are the top minor professional hockey league affiliate of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs.
