Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League announced today that Flint Firebirds Forward Brennan Othmann (pronounced auth-min) has been named to the OHL First All-Rookie Team for the 2019-20 season. Othmann becomes just the second Flint Firebird ever to receive the award, following defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok (2018-19).
“We’d like to congratulate Brennan and his family on being named to the OHL’s First All-Rookie Team,” said Flint Firebirds Vice President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Barclay Branch. “Brennan is an elite young talent and is very deserving of this distinction. It is an example of his hard work and commitment and we could not be happier for him.”
Othmann broke the Firebirds rookie franchise records for goals (17) and points (33) in 55 games while also recording two game-winning goals with Flint during the 2019-20 OHL season. The Pickering, Ont., native was selected by the Firebirds with the second-overall pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection on Apr. 6. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound forward was among the 66 players selected to represent Canada at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in November. Brennan is a prospect eligible for the 2021 NHL Draft.
“I am very grateful to have been named to the OHL’s First All-Rookie Team,” said Othmann. “It was a goal of mine coming into this season with Flint and for it to become a reality means a lot. Although it is an individual award, this could not have been possible without my teammates, our coaching staff, trainers and the entire organization in Flint.”
The OHL All-Rookie Teams were selected by the OHL’s General Managers, with voting conducted in two stages beginning with a Conference ballot followed by a final ballot that integrated the top selections from both the Eastern and Western Conference results.
OHL Rookie of the Year and 2019 OHL Priority Selection first overall pick Shane Wright of the Kingston Frontenacs headlined the First All-Rookie Team. Wright led OHL rookies as an exceptional status underage talent with 39 goals and 66 points over 58 games. He was joined on the First Team by former Don Mills Flyers Minor Midget teammates in second overall OHL Priority Selection choice Brennan Othmann of the Flint Firebirds and fourth overall pick Brandt Clarke of the Barrie Colts on the back end. Sudbury Wolves winger Chase Stillman and Finnish-born Windsor Spitfires rearguard Ruben Rafkin joined London Knights standout netminder Brett Brochu in completing the First Team.
