Flint, Mich. – The Firebirds won their third-straight home game in a 6-2 triumph over the visiting Peterborough Petes in front of more than 3,100 fans on the club’s fifth-annual ‘Pink Out Night’ Saturday. Dennis Busby (Arizona Coyotes), Brennan Othmann and Cody Morgan each had a two-point game to lead the ‘Birds. Firebirds’ captain Ty Dellandrea (Dallas Stars) extended his point streak (3G, 4A) to four games. Anthony Popovich made 26 saves on 28 shots for his fourth win in five starts between the pipes. Flint improved to 5-2-0-0 on the season, a new franchise-best start. The Petes were led by rearguard Declan Chisholm (Winnipeg Jets), who also had a goal and an assist.
Two defenseman traded goals early in the first period. First, Dennis Busby scored his first of the season just 2:06 into the game. Brennan Othmann dropped the puck back between his skates from the center of the right offensive face-off circle. Busby corralled the puck at the top of the circle and launched a wrister that found twine through the five-hole. Othmann and Ethan Keppen (Vancouver Canucks) combined for the assists.
Declan Chisholm tied the game with his first of the campaign at 3:20, on a similar wrister from above the left circle. Semyon Der-Arguchintsev was credited with the lone helper.
First-period shots favored Flint 14 – 8.
Just 33 seconds into the middle frame, Ty Dellandrea made a spin-o-rama move between two defenders and lifted a short-range backhand for his third of the season. Braeden Kressler and Jake Durham had the assists. Then, at 9:14 of period two, Cody Morgan knocked in a rebound for his third of the season. Busby took the initial shot, and the rebound off netminder Hunter Jones (Minnesota Wild) was shot back on net by Evan Vierling before finding Morgan on the doorstep.
Jack Phibbs added an insurance goal at 13:22 on a wide-angle shot from the left-wing boards. The goal was Phibbs’ first of the season, assisted by Emmet Pierce. Jones was replaced by first-year goaltender Tye Austin immediately after Phibbs’ goal.
Zach Gallant (San Jose Sharks) cut the Peterborough deficit to two with his second of the season at 15:26, faking a far-side shot before scoring just inside the near post from the right circle. Northville, Mich. native Nick Robertson (Toronto Maple Leafs) extended his point streak (11G, 7A) to nine games with the first helper, and Chisholm picked up the second assist.
Then, Othmann slipped behind the defense and knocked home a perfect pass from Morgan to complete the second-period scoring. It was his third of season, assisted by Morgan and defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok (Florida Panthers).
Second-period shots favored Flint 13 – 12 for a 40-minute advantage of 27 – 20.
Braden Kressler scored his first goal on home ice and second of the season off a Peterborough turnover 4:32 into period three to complete the scoring in the contest. The final tally was unassisted.
Final shots on goal were 37 – 28 in favor of the home team. The Petes finished one-for-two with the man-advantage, and the Firebirds were unable to convert on three power-play chances.
Next up for Flint is two consecutive away games in Windsor on Thursday and in Kitchener Friday night. The ‘Birds return home Saturday to host the North Bay Battalion.
